Resume Assignment: Tailoring My Resume

I began the process of tailoring my resume to the job ad by focusing on the industry I’d be specifically applying for. Since the publishing industry mainly focuses on skills revolving around administrative skills and inter-personal skills, I made sure to provide example of those in the job descriptions. I specifically highlighted in my “Campus Involvement”, “Education”, and my personal summary sections, a love for literature and experience in editorial settings. It’s simple to suggest that one applying for a publishing role should express their knowledge of publishing practicum and love for books.

I specifically integrated keywords in my skills sections. Most of the stuff they asked for in the job ad were things that I coincidentally already had listed in my skills section, so it was easy to integrate the rest. I did employ a “show but not tell” tactic in my job descriptions, attempting to show them how I encompass the key traits that they’re looking for rather than incorporate the keywords directly in the description. I find it hard to be subtle about the keywords, but I was able to incorporate one into my personal summary.

I already partially had my resume tailored to the publishing industry, but I see how tweaking it to tailor to specific job ads can be more appealing to recruiters. The keywords help to sort through the hundreds of applications the receive and showing clear and true experience in their specific field surely helps to make the resume look better beside another which seems vague and non-descript.
